From 3 November 2025, student visa holders will be eligible to work up to 25 hours per week.  This change follows the announcement in July 2025 as part of the Government’s International Education Going for Growth Plan.

What’s changing?

More work hours for eligible students
Eligible secondary and tertiary school students can now work up to 25 hours per week during the semester, an increase from the current 20-hour limit.

  • This applies to all new student visas granted from 3 November, even if the application was submitted earlier.
  • Current visa holders must apply for a variation of conditions or a new student visa to access the extra hours.
  • Full-time work during scheduled breaks remains unchanged.

New work rights for exchange and study abroad students
All tertiary students on approved exchange or Study Abroad programmes will now be eligible for in-study work rights.

More work hours for some dependent visitor visa holders
Dependent child visitor visa holder awaiting residence outcomes (i.e. those who have already finished school) and Skilled Migrant Category Interim Visa holders can also increase their work rights from 20 to 25 hours per week.

How to apply for the extra work hours

  • Current Student Visa Holders
If your visa includes conditions allowing 20-hours work per week or you are a tertiary student on an approved exchange or Study Abroad programme, you can apply online for a variation of conditions from 3 November 2025.
  • Other Eligible Visa Holders
Submit a paper-based application using the Variation of Conditions form.

These changes give student visa holders greater flexibility to support themselves financially and gain valuable New Zealand work experience while studying.
