The Government has announced an important update to the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) settings that will impact a significant portion of employers and migrant workers.
From 1 June 2026, minimum English language requirements will be extended to ANZSCO and National Occupation List (NOL) Skill Level 3 roles. This brings these roles into line with existing requirements already in place for Skill Levels 4 and 5.
What this means
- Applicants for Skill Level 3 AEWV roles will now need to meet a minimum English standard (IELTS 4.0 or equivalent)
- This reflects a basic, everyday level of English, designed to support communication at work and understanding of rights and obligations
- The change is significant, as Skill Level 3 roles make up around half of AEWV applications
Who is affected?
The new requirement applies to:
- New AEWV applications lodged from 1 June 2026 for Skill Level 3 roles, even if their employer received a job check token before 1 June 2026.
Key exemptions and transitional provisions
- AEWV holders with visas expiring on or before 1 December 2026 may be exempt when applying for an AEWV to obtain the balance of their maximum stay.
- Applicants who have already demonstrated English ability in previous applications will not need to provide this again.
- The requirement does not apply to:
- Job Change applications
- Global Workforce Seasonal Visa and Peak Seasonal Visa roles
What you should do now
If you are an employer or migrant working in, or planning to recruit for, Skill Level 3 roles, it is important to:
- Review upcoming recruitment and visa timelines
- Identify candidates who may need to meet English requirements and have them do the English language test early
- Plan early to avoid delays in visa processing
