As of 27 January 2025, visitor visas now allow you to work remotely for an overseas employer or clients while enjoying all that New Zealand has to offer.
Here’s the Breakdown
- Work Remotely: Visitors coming to New Zealand for tourism, visiting family, and even partners/guardians on longer-term visitor visas can now work remotely for overseas employers.
- Applies to All: This includes both visitor visa holders and those entering with an NZeTA. It also applies to existing visitor visa holders already travelling in New Zealand.
- Boost to Tourism: This change aims to attract more “digital nomads” and boost the New Zealand economy.
Important Restrictions:
- Primary purpose: A visitor visa still requires that visiting for tourism, or seeing family & friends is the primary purpose of your trip
- No NZ Employers: You cannot work for a New Zealand-based company.
- No NZ Goods/Services: You cannot sell goods or services to New Zealand businesses or individuals.
- No Physical Presence Required: Your work cannot require you to be physically present at a New Zealand workplace.
If you are aiming to do one of these things, a work visa will be required.
Tax Implications:
If you plan to work remotely from New Zealand for more than 92 days in a 12-month period, be aware of potential tax obligations.
What This Means for You:
This is a fantastic opportunity to combine travel with remote work in one of the world’s most beautiful countries. Whether you’re planning a short visit or considering a longer stay, you can now keep up with your work commitments while exploring New Zealand’s stunning landscapes and vibrant culture, or while visiting family and friends in New Zealand.
